Hi Simon
I realise that these particular documents aren't appropriate to go in the repository as OERs but it's interesting to note your use of box.net which COULD, of course, be used for OERs; as could slideshare, YouTube and a whole range of Web 2.0 platforms that people, including academics, are already using.
This is something that we were thinking about as part of the PERSoNA project - http://personanews.wordpress.com/ - and I think it's worth noting that we are unlikely to be able to emulate either the ease of use or the slick functionality of these sites, at least in the short term; people are increasingly used to this type of sharing on third party sites that generally have only user generated key-words to aid discovery; what these sites lack, of course, is comprehensive metadata and a branded institutional interface for discovery - not to mention institutional control/ownership of resources.
Ideally we want to encourage deposit of digital assets themselves in the repository but perhaps we also need to accommodate ways in which folk may already be storing and sharing their resources out on the web - then perhaps we can continue to link to the external URL - wherever that may be - and catalogue it in the repository with comprehensive metadata and ensure it is discoverable from an appropriate search interface on a Leeds Met domain.
