Official Launch of OER programme.

I suppose that I can now be considered a pioneer? After all I have been working on this OER project now for almost 2 months and the official release has only just happened!

In all seriousness, this "official" launch marks an important milestone in the pursuit of OER implementation across the education sector.

The statement also emphasises the importance of the current projects being implemented across a range if institutions. The challenge for me remains the cross faculty… Continue

Polls

I have been looking at setting up some polls to gather data in a way which is not as daunting as a questionnaire but has relevance and impact to the project.

I am using a free service at http://polldaddy.com/

Creating the poll is easy, but trying to embed the poll into the ning site is proving more difficult - anyone any ideas?

The html/java code used needs placing on ning somehow and I just can't see where to do it!

Quality Control & Ownership

One question I posed in some of the conversations with colleagues was whether it really matters if there are duplicate materials (i.e. on institutional repositories as well as Jorum Open). Surely the purpose of the project is making materials open and available?

The "master" version does not necessarily matter once it is in the public domain as we are encouraging people to change it, add to it and then offer it out into the community again. If an institution wishes to maintain a… Continue

Liaison with other projects in the institutional strand

As a repository development officer working on the Unicycle project I am interested in how we can most effectively integrate with JorumOpen and liaise with other projects in the institutional strand around technical infrastructure, standardised metadata and version control (to name but a few). We are using the intraLibrary repository platform and our project will aim to disseminate OERs via both our own and the national service; such liaison could be of potential benefit to JorumOpen and the… Continue

Open Educational Resources Programme start-up meeting: What I learned

(Originally posted at http://repositorynews.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/open-educational-resources-programme-start-up-meeting-what-i-learned/)

I very much enjoyed the OER programme start-up meeting on Tuesday, in spite of the 05:30 alarm and having to hoof it across Manchester on account of ‘improvements’ to the Metrolink. I recognised several colleagues… Continue

JorumOpen at the OER Startup Meeting

A requirement of the Unicycle project is to deposit the materials into Jorum Open. (As well as our own institutional repository).

Currently in BETA mode the Jorum Open Deposit tool was demonstrated with a fairly simple interface, an upload area for the file(s) and areas for description, title, meta data and author.

This approach has clearly been approved by JISC and so might be appropriate method for taking forward our own OER repository.

The preference from… Continue

OER Startup meeting.

JISC is holding it's OER startup meeting today in London - 5.30am start from my house!

There are 7 institutional strand projects (of which we are one).

It is clear that JISC are supporting these projects in a number of ways including:

1 - IPR assistance - advice and guidance from JISC Legal

2 - Data protection

3 - Project Management

4 - Communities of practice (learning from other projects)

At Leeds Met one of the areas we will be… Continue

OERs shining light, new textbook model, or harbinger of a new imperialism

A provocative (and long!) post, whatever you think of the term "curvy knowledge":
